Public Relations Committee Veteran Boosts CRC Awareness through Community Outreach

Beth Schorr-Lesnick, MD, FACG has played an active role in recent years in raising community awareness of colorectal cancer during March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Dr. Schorr-Lesnick’s participation in numerous community outreach activities demonstrates her commitment to colorectal cancer awareness and education.

Dr. Schorr-Lesnick served as guest speaker at a health care forum on colorectal cancer screening for the American Muslim Women’s Association in Mohegan Lake, NY. “Being able to provide these religious women with information and facts about colorectal cancer screening, and how to take better care of themselves and their families was very rewarding,” said Dr. Schorr-Lesnick.

In collaboration with Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Schorr-Lesnick met with primary care physicians at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, New York, to highlight updated guidelines on colorectal cancer screening. Additionally, Dr. Schorr-Lesnick delivered a series of talks on colorectal cancer screening at local churches, synagogues/Hadassahs, and community hospitals.

As a member of the ACG Public Relations Committee, Dr. Schorr-Lesnick contributed articles to community newspapers as part of the College’s Hometown “Letter to the Editor” CRC initiative and participated in several radio interviews across the nation to promote colorectal cancer awareness and prevention.

As a result of Dr. Schorr-Lesnick’s community outreach efforts, the Yonkers City Council issued an official proclamation recognizing March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in 2007.

Dr. Schorr-Lesnick is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and has a private practice in gastroenterology affiliated with St. John’s Riverside Hospital, Dobbs Ferry Hospital, and Lawrence Hospital. She received her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.
