RESEARCH HAS SHOWN that as many as 19 million Americans may be suffering from a serious digestive disease known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, but they are not aware of its potential dangers or effective treatment options. The American College of Gastroenterology has launched a public education program to increase awareness of GERD, a chronic digestive condition. Even though 25 million Americans experience acid indigestion every day, very few of these people actually consult their physicians. As a result, many people do not know enough about heartburn to realize their problem may be something more serious, such as GERD.
