Instructions to Poster Authors
Slide Guidelines for Paper Presentations

Again this year, for the ACG 2008 Annual Scientific Meeting in Orlando, Florida, ACG will consider late-breaking abstracts of high quality clinical research results. ACG will consider extending the program to create a few additional slots in response to submissions of great merit and clinical interest.  The deadline for late-breaking abstracts is Monday, August 25th, at 11:59 pm Eastern Time.  Abstracts must be submitted as outlined below.  Please do not resubmit abstracts already considered during the regular 2008 abstracts review process.  Abstracts submitted in the late-breaking abstracts section will NOT be included in the September Abstracts issue of The American Journal of Gastroenterology

To submit an abstract, authors may e-mail the abstract as a Word document by clicking on the button below and attaching the document to the e-mail message. Please follow the instructions below to ensure consideration:

Preparation of Abstract

Title should be brief and clearly state the content of the paper. List the presenting author’s name first. Give the name and the location of the institution where the work was done. If not done at an institution, then only give the city and state. Authors are instructed not to include any direct or indirect reference to their institution(s). Only one degree should be listed, e.g. MD, PhD, etc. Titles, position and institutional appointment should not be included. AUTHORS WHO ARE FELLOWS OF ACG SHOULD INCLUDE “FACG” (see format below).

Example:
Biofeedback Therapy for Fecal Incontinence.
David Goldenberg, MD, Kathie Hodges, Horacio Jinich, MD, FACG, Theodore Hersh, MD, FACG, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA

Fecal incontinence, a bothersome condition of diverse etiologies, is often refractory to medical and surgical therapy. Biofeedback conditioning offers a new therapeutic modality.

Organize the body of the abstract as follows:

1. Purpose of the study (one sentence if possible)
2. Simple statement of methods
3. Summary of results obtained
4. Statement of the conclusions reached (do not state: “The results will be discussed.”)

Standard abbreviations may be used: RBC, gm., kg., mg., ml., % (percent)/(per)

You must designate one of the following categories for each abstract:

A. Esophagus
B. Stomach
C. Pancreatic/Biliary
D. Small Intestine/Unclassified
E. Liver
F. Colon
G. Clinical Vignettes
H. Outcomes Research
I. IBD
J. Functional Bowel Disorders
K. Endoscopy
L. Pediatrics
M. Colorectal Cancer Prevention

General Instructions

Simple tables or graphs may be included if they fit within the abstract.

Nonproprietary (generic) names should be used the first time a drug is mentioned and should be typed in small letter.  Proprietary names are capitalized.

Splitting the results of research into multiple abstracts (i.e., minor variations of a drug treatment protocol) is discouraged.  [The Program Committee may ask that the data be combined into a single talk.]  Abstracts chosen for oral presentation must be delivered by an author who speaks and understands English well enough to ensure satisfactory understanding and later discussion.

Unless otherwise indicated, all correspondence will be conducted with the primary author.  It is assumed that in the event the paper is accepted, the primary author will present.

Authors are invited to submit complete manuscripts to the Editors of The American Journal of Gastroenterology to be considered for publication.

Font Style and Size

All abstracts must be submitted using only Courier, Helvetica or Times Roman typestyles, in either 10 or 12 point.  Smaller size type or other type styles are not permitted.

Abstract Length

The size limit of the body of the abstract (including authors, institutions, title, body tables and figures) is 2,750 characters.  Please note, each figure counts as 371 characters.

Keywords

Authors must select up to three keywords or short phrases that will be used to create subject and search indices. Avoid use of acronyms or overly broad topics.

Disclosure

As a provider accredited by the ACCME, the American College of Gastroenterology must ensure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor in all its individually sponsored or jointly sponsored educational activities.  All faculty participating in a sponsored activity are required to disclose to the activity audience any financial interest or other relationship (1) with the manufacturer(s) of any commercial product(s) and/or provider(s) of commercial services discussed in an educational presentation, and (2) with any commercial supporters of the activity.  (Financial interest or other relationship can include such things as employment, honoraria, consultancies, speaker’s bureau, stock ownership or options [other than mutual funds], expert testimony, grants received or pending, patents pending, royalties, etc. occurring within the past 12 months.)   The intent of this disclosure is not to prevent a speaker with a financial or other relationship from making a presentation, but rather to provide listeners with information on which they can make their own judgments.  It remains for the audience to determine whether the speaker’s interests or relationships may influence the presentation with regard to exposition or conclusions.

All presenters must fill out a disclosure declaration.  The form is available by clicking on the button below.  Authors should print out the form and fax it to ACG at 301-263-9025.  Any speaker who refuses to disclose relevant financial relationships will be disqualified from being a part of this CME activity.
